The device shown in the image is a ship borne radar system ( commonly found on the masts of warships ), and the slip ring is one of the core components that enables its continuous operation.
Application of slip rings in ship borne radar systems are mainly integrated into the rotating base of the radar antenna. The radar antenna needs to rotate continuously 360° to achieve omnidirectional detection, while the power supply and signal transmission lines (such as radio frequency signals and control commands) are fixed to stationary structures such as the mast. The slip ring is installed at the connection point between the rotating antenna shaft and the stationary base.
Working Principle of Slip Rings in ship borne radar equipment. A slip ring is essentially a "rotating conductive/signal transmission device." Its core structure involves the contact and interaction between a rotating ring and a stationary ring.
Rotating part rotates synchronously with the radar antenna and is connected to the antenna's power supply and signal lines. Stationary part is Fixed to the equipment base and connected to the power supply and signal receiving end of the shipboard system. When the antenna rotates, the rotating ring and the stationary ring maintain continuous contact through wear-resistant conductive contacts (such as precious metal brushes), thereby achieving "uninterrupted power and signal transmission between rotating and stationary components."
The role of slip rings in ship borne is ensuring omnidirectional detection. Allowing the radar antenna to continuously scan 360° without "power interruption and stopping," thus avoiding blind spots in detection. Next role is ensuring stable signal transmission. Maintaining stable transmission of radio frequency signals and control commands during high-speed rotation, ensuring the accuracy of detection data. Third role is extending equipment lifespan. Replacing "cable winding" connections, preventing wire wear and breakage, and reducing the probability of equipment failure.
